- Apex court allows 20 mt iron ore mining a year in Goa. The Supreme Court allowed an annual cap of 20 million tonnes of iron ore to be extracted in Goa which was banned by it in the state for nearly one-and-a-half years.A Bench comprising justices AK Patnaik, SS Nijjar and FMI Kalifulla, however, said the expert panel will give final a recommendation on annual cap on excavation of iron ore within six months.
- L.K. Advani’s official website hacked. The official website of veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani was hacked today allegedly by Pakistani hackers who posted messages of “free-Kashmir” on the portal. The hacker, who called himself Muhammad Bilal, wrote “Pakistan Zindabad” messages on the site and called for an end to militarised governance in Kashmir.

- 3M India Ltd has appointed Sameer Agarwal as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The company, in a release to the stock exchanges, said a decision to this effect was taken at the Board of Directors meeting held on April 18.
- HDFC Bank has set a Guinness World Record by conducting a blood donation drive. The annual blood donation drive organized by the bank in December 2013 has been recognized as the largest effort of its kind across the globe."The largest blood donation (multiple venues) involved 61,902 participants and was achieved by HDFC Bank with 1,115 blood donation camps held across 709 locations in India on December 6, 2013," the bank quoted an official citation from Guinness World Record.
- Shaik Abdul Hameed of India won the 2014 Thailand Tour title of Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) on 19 April 2014 at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothinon in Bangkok, Thailand. With this Hameed became the first Indian to win the title of ABF.
- The hero of the NASA’s Apollo Program John C. Houbolt died on 20 April 2014 after the complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 95.
- Former American middleweight boxer, Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter died on 20 April 2014 at his home in Toronto, Canada following a battle with prostate cancer. He was 76.
- Stanislas Wawrinka on 20 April 2014 won the men's single Monte Carlo Masters Tennis title by defeating former world number one Roger Federer, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2. With this, the 29-year-old Wawrinka has won his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title.
- Crisil sees economy growing at 6.5% in next 5 years. Rating agency Crisil has said a stable government post-elections is likely to help the country grow at an average of 6.5 per cent for the next five years. The International Monetary Fund has predicted global growth for the calendar years 2014-18 at 4 per cent. However, Crisil said it is not the election results which impact the economy, except in improving sentiment, but policies formulated by the new government that will boost growth.Economic growth eased to 4.6% in the first three quarters of FY14 after clocking 9.3 per cent in FY12 and the just-concluded financial year may log the lowest growth rate in decades.
- Justice G Rohini becomes Delhi HC's first woman Chief Justice. The Delhi High Court on Monday got its first woman Chief Justice. Justice G Rohini took her oath as the first woman Chief Justice of the court, almost 47 years after it was established.An alumni of Osmania University in Hyderabad, Justice Rohini was the senior-most judge of the Andhra Pradesh High court.
- FinMin appoints Ila Patnaik as Principal Economic Advisor. Centre has appointed columnist and RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, Ila Patnaik, as Principal Economic Advisor, a post that had been vacant since November 2013.The appointment assumes significance as Dr. Patnaik has in her columns by-and-large concurred with Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan’s policy stances.
