PSLV C23 launched successfully from Sriharikota

I. It was a 'grand' exclusive commercial success for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which successfully launched Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C23 with five foreign satellites into the space this morning. This has strengthened India's space mission capability to launch foreign satellites on a commercial basis.

II. At 9.52 a.m., the ISRO’s power horse PSLV roared into the cloudy sky from the first launch pad here at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota. The launch was delayed by three minutes to avoid space debris.

III. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was ecstatic after watching the launch (his first after taking over as PM) from the mission control room along with senior ISRO officials, including Chairman K Radhakrishnan.

Foreign satellites

The rocked carried a 714 kg French Earth Observation Satellite SPOT-7 as the main payload. This satellite was built by Airbus Defence and Space, a leading European space technology company. This satellite will be placed diametrically opposite to SPOT-6 and will form part of the existing observation constellation.

It also carried Germany's 14 kg AISAT (a sea monitoring system), NLS7.1 and NLS7.2 of Canada (each weighing 15 kg for accurate position control system) and Singrapore's 7 kg VELOX-1 (for inhouse design of image sensor).

Emerald Jewel Industry MD bags entrepreneurship award

I.K Srinivasan, Managing Director of Emerald Jewel Industry India Ltd, Coimbatore, has been awarded the 'EO- Entrepreneur of the year 2014’ by the Entrepreneurs’ Organisation (EO), Coimbatore.

II.T Sathish Kumar, Managing Director, Milky Mist Dairy Foods Private Ltd, Chittode in Erode District, was chosen for the 'Emerging Entrepreneur of the year 2014’ award.

III.The awards, given to young entrepreneurs from the western region of Tamil Nadu comprising Coimbatore, Tirupur, the Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal and Salem districts, was presented by M M Murugappan, Vice Chairman of Murugappa Group, Chennai, at a function held here on Friday.

IV.The organisation said that the award was given in recognition of entrepreneurs for their contribution in stimulating economic growth, in employment generation and for fulfilling their social responsibilities etc. Deloitte had collaborated with EO Coimbatore in this regard.

Malala Yousafzai wins Liberty Medal

I. A Pakistani girl Malala Yousafzai has won the Liberty Medal from the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia.

II. “It’s an honour to be awarded the Liberty Medal,” Yousafzai, now 17, said yesterday. “I accept this award on behalf of all the children around the world who are struggling to get an education”.

III. The medal has been awarded annually since 1989, when Polish Solidarity founder Lech Walesa received it first. Since then, recipients have included Muhammad Ali, former President Jimmy Carter, and, last year, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

IV. Yousafzai will receive the award at a ceremony at the centre on October 21.

West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan resigns from his post

I. West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan today resigned from his post. Official sources confirmed his resignation. Earlier, the Governors of Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Nagaland had resigned following new government at the Centre. Sources said some other state governors may also resign in the coming days.

II. The new government has also not renewed the tenures of Karnataka governor H.R. Bhardwaj and Tripura governor Devanand Konwar. Both were appointed during the UPA regime and their terms ended last week.

Financial inclusion: Govt tells PSBs to open 20 cr accounts in next 1 yr

I.The BJP Government wants public sector banks to go flat out on the financial inclusion front, asking them to open 20 crore basic savings bank deposit (BSBD) accounts for those at the bottom of the pyramid in the next one year.

II.Meeting the above mentioned target could prove an uphill task as banks, including public sector and private sector banks, collectively opened just 10.85 crore BSBD accounts in three financial years up to March-end 2013.

III.According to the timelines drawn up by the Finance Ministry, beginning August 15, public sector banks (PSBs) have ot collectively open 5 crore BSBD accounts up to November-end 2014.

IV.Further, there has to be an incremental addition of 5 crore accounts in each of the time periods ending March 31, 2015, June 30, 2015, and August 14, 2015.

V.The chief of a PSB said employees of all State-owned banks will have to roll up their sleeves to achieve the financial inclusion targets.

Pankaj Advani wins his maiden IBSF 6-Red World Snooker title in Egypt

I. Indian cueist Pankaj Advani won his maiden IBSF 6-Red World snooker title at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt today.

II. He defeated Kacper Flilpiak of Poland in the final that lasted barely an hour. With this win, Advani today created history by becoming the first player in the world to win world titles in the long and shorter formats of both billiards and snooker.

Vijaya Bank launches eLobby

I.Vijaya Bank's eLobby and refurbished branch at Varadarajapuram near Singanallur was inaugurated this morning.

II.The bank's Chairman and Managing Director V Kannan inaugurated the eLobby and highlighted the facilities it offered including a cash deposit machine, passbook printer and ATM.

III.He urged the customers to make use of the eLobby and avail of the round-the-clock services.

IV.The bank is targeting residential pockets for establishing the eLobby.

Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik won prize at World Cup of Sand Sculpting-2014

I.Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik on 27 June 2014 won the People's Choice prize at the World Cup of Sand Sculpting-2014 held in the Atlantic City of the US. He won prize for his work Save Tree, Save the Future. This is first sand art world cup at USA 2014.

II.The competition was begun on 19 June 2014. Twenty internationally renowned sand artists from around the world participated in the event. Every sculptor got 30 hours to create their artwork using 10 tons of sand.

III.Pattnaik also participated in doubles category with an American sculptor Mathew Roy Diebert. Both created sand sculpture of Tajmahal. They were placed at fifth position in the doubles category.

Saina Nehwal wins Australian Open Super Series title

I. Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has won her second title of the year after beating Carolina Marin of Spain 21-18, 21-11 in the Australian Open Super Series final in Sydney .

II. Saina stuttered a bit initially in the second game today but she fought back in style and led 11-4 against struggling Carolina at the interval. Saina sealed the title in her favour by winning the second game 21-11.

III. Sixth-seeded Saina got off the blocks early as she won the first game 21-18 against promising Spaniard Carolina, who was playing her first World Super Series final. Saina Nehwal has won the Indian Open Grandprix Gold in Delhi early this year .
