IPL probe report: Gurunath Meiyappan involved in betting
1.In a major embarrassment to BCCI President N Srinivasan and raising questions over the status of Chennai Super Kings, his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan’s role in CSK as the team official and his involvement in betting during the IPL matches stands proved, a Supreme Court-appointed Committee has found.
2.“The role of Gurunath Meiyappan in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the team official stands proved and the allegations of betting and passing of information against Meiyappan stand proved,” a report of the three-member committee headed by former Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal said.
3.“However, the allegations of fixing require further investigation,” said the committee, also comprising Additional Solicitor General N Nagehswar Rao and Assam Cricket Association member Nilay Dutta.
Govt appoints two directors on Coal India board
1.State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) today announced appointment of two new non-official part time directors on the company’s board.
2.Both the directors — Indranil Manna and Shri Prakash — will be on the board of CIL for a period of three years with effect from February 6, 2014, the company said in a filing to the BSE.
3.Manna, Director, IIT, Kanpur and Prakash, Ex-Member (Traffic), Railway Board are “appointed as non-official part time directors on the board of the company by the Ministry of Coal for a period of three years w.e.f. February 6, 2014,” it said.
Employees' strike hits normal banking operations
1.Around 10 lakh bank employees and officers across the country struck work today to mark their protest against banking sector reforms as also to impress upon the Government the need for immediate settlement of their wage accord.
2.Today is the first day of the two-day strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions comprising nine trade unions such as the All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers' Confederation, AIBOA, BEFI, NCBE, INBEF, INBOC, NOBW and NOBO.
3.Terming the strike a 'total success', General Secretary of AIBEA CH Venkatachalam said that banking transactions, including clearing operations, were paralysed. About 10 crore cheques worth over ₹7.40 lakh crore could not be cleared.
4.In Chennai clearing house, 90 lakh cheques worth about ₹64,000 crore could not be processed in clearing. Government and foreign exchange transactions and money market operations were affected, and ATMs too went dry in a number of places, he said.
5."The strike has been forced on us with IBA and the Government not heeding to our demand and delaying the settlement, which is already overdue,'' he said in reply to a question, adding ít is not our intention to inconvenience the public, but it has been forced on us.
Akshaya Patra gets award for excellence in financial reporting
1.The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been awarded the Gold Shield and Hall of Fame by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the year 2012-13.
2.The foundation has been awarded under the Category XI Not-for-Profit Sector.
3.Manish Tiwari, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, and Justice G.S. Sistani, Judge, Delhi High Court, presented the award at a function held in New Delhi.
4.This is the fifth consecutive year Akshaya Patra has won the Gold Shield and is in the Hall of Fame now. Hall of Fame is awarded to an entity who has been a winner of Gold Shield for five consecutive years under the same category.
5.Since inception (1958) of this award, only two organisations have won the Hall of Fame and in the Not-for-Profit sector, Akshaya Patra is the first NGO to receive the Hall of Fame.
Vote-on-account Budget presented in AP
1.Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy on Monday presented a vote-on-account Budget amid protests and noisy scenes.
2.As he began his speech, there were protests by a section of the members in the House causing disruption to the Budget speech. Hence, the Finance Minister after reading his speech for few minutes jumped to the last few paras and concluded it.
3.In the speech, he said that the Government proposes to spend ₹1,83,129 crore during 2014-15. This includes non-Plan expenditure of ₹1,15,179 crore and Plan expenditure of ₹67,950 crore. This will leave a revenue surplus of ₹474 crore and a fiscal deficit of ₹25,402 crore, estimated at 2.6 per cent of gross state domestic product.
4.Earlier, ministers from Telangana region stayed away from the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet meeting which has been convened for approving the vote-on-account Budget for 2014-15.
India ranks 5th in consumer confidence: report
1.In terms of consumer confidence among emerging market economies, India has been ranked fifth in a list that was topped by China, says a Credit Suisse report.
2.According to the latest emerging consumer survey by Credit Suisse in partnership with global market research firm Nielsen, confidence among emerging market consumers has deteriorated during the last year.
3.Around 26 per cent of respondents believe that their personal finances would improve over the next three months as compared to 28 per cent a year ago.
4.Meanwhile, optimism level in India has also slipped four percentage points over last year and India was ranked fifth in the list. Among others, Indonesia was ranked third in the list, followed by Mexico.
5.However, beneath the headline readings, there are signs of an underlying improvement, as more people believe this is a good time to purchase big ticket items and more people now expect inflation to fall, the report said.
6.Rural areas have seen a much bigger improvement than urban areas in most categories. The net balance of those expecting income to rise rather than fall was (+) 6 per cent in rural areas versus (-) 15 per cent in urban areas.
RBI allows FIIs to purchase 30% shares in Dabur
1.The Reserve Bank on Monday allowed Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) to purchase shares in Dabur India up to 30 per cent of the firm’s paid up capital.
2.FIIs have been allowed to buy more shares in Dabur India as the company has passed a special resolution to enhance the limit for purchase of its equity shares and convertible debentures by FIIs.
3.“FIIs, through primary market and stock exchanges, can now purchase up to 30 per cent of the paid up capital of Dabur India Limited under the Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS),” RBI said in a release.
4.As per data available on the BSE, FIIs held 19.94 per cent shares in Dabur India as of quarter ended December 2013.
5.FIIs, NRIs and PIOs are allowed to invest in the primary and secondary capital markets in India through PIS.
Pakistan Cricket Board chief removed
1.In another stunning twist in Pakistan’s cricket administration, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has sacked Zaka Ashraf as the Chairman of the PCB and suspended the Governing board with immediate effect.
2.In a notification issued by the ministry of inter provincial coordination, the Prime Minister, in his capacity as patron in chief of the board, has appointed an 11-member ad-hoc committee to run the cricket affairs.
3.The ad-hoc committee includes former Test players Zaheer Abbas and Iqbal Qasim and former Chairmen of the board, Shaharyar Khan and Najam Sethi.
4.“The committee will nominate a Chairman to head the ad-hoc administration,” the notification said.
Sushil Koirala becomes new Prime Minister of Nepal
1.Veteran Nepali Congress leader Sushil Koirala was today elected Prime Minister of Nepal with the support of the CPN-UML, ending months of political instability following last year's elections.
2.Koirala, the sole contestant in the premier race, was elected with 405 votes in the 601-member Constituent Assembly.
3.As many as 148 lawmakers from UCPN-Maoist, Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal and some small parties in the Maoist-led alliance voted against 75-year-old Koirala.
4.After the voting, Parliament Speaker Surya Bahadur Thapa declared that Koirala had secured the majority. The announcement was followed by applause inside the hall.
GDP growth will not be less than 5%, says Chidambaram
1.Union Finance Minister P. Chidamabaram said on Saturday that the Central Statistical Office’s estimate of Gross Domestic Product growth of 4.9 percent for 2013-14 “will in all likelihood be revised upward in the first, second and final revisions in the next two years.”
2.“I am confident that the final estimate will be not less than 5 per cent for the whole year,” he said in a statement.
3.The CSO estimate, released on Friday, meant growth in the second half of the year was better than what it was in the first half, Mr. Chidambaram said. “We anticipated that growth in the second half would improve, and I am happy that our assessment has come true.”
Bindra became 1st person to win three gold medals in Tri-series shooting
1.Abhinav Bindra, the Indian shooter on 8 February 2014 won his third gold-medal in the Inter-Shoot Tri-series Shooting in the Air Pistol event. With this, he became the first person to win three gold medals in the event that is being held at the Hague, Netherlands.
2.To win the third gold medal, he shot 209.3 in the finals and finished ahead of the second-placed shooter by 2.4 points. On 7 February 2014, Bindra also topped in the qualifiers in the second competition and ended with a final score of 627.7 points being ahead of Alin George Moldoveanu, the Olympic champion by 6.6 points.
3.In the first competition on 6 February 2014 he qualified in the game on eighth position with a score of 613.3 points and in the finals, he left behind highest qualifier Peter Hellenbrand of Netherlands by his last two shots that brought him 10.6 and 10.8 points.
Russian Teenage Skater Becomes Youngest Olympic Champion
1.Yulia Lipnitskaya became the youngest ever Winter Olympic gold medalist at just 15, taking the podium with Russia's figure skaters in the team competition.
2.This was also the hosts' first gold medal at the Sochi games. The magnificent triumph of the teenage Russian and the veteran Yevgeny Plushchenko was watched live in the Iceberg Skating Palace by President Vladimir Putin.
3."I don't think this was my best. I was a little bit nervous after Yevgeny got first because my main motivation was not to let the team down", the humble teenage champion commented.
4.Russia topped 5 of the 8 segments of the team competition, earning 75 points. The silver medal went to Canada, with 65 points, while the United States took bronze with 60.
