India and Maldives ink several pacts
India and Maldives have agreed to strengthen cooperation to enhance maritime safety and security in the Indian Ocean Region through joint patrolling, aerial and maritime surveillance.Besides, the two countries decided to enhance bilateral cooperation on issues of common concern including terrorism, organized crime, drug and human trafficking.

Canara Bank launches skill development programme for J&K youth
Bangalore, Jan 2:
Canara Bank, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), has launched ‘Udaan’ in Jammu and Kashmir in co-ordination with NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation) and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).
R.K. Dubey, Chairman & Managing Director, Canara Bank, said that the aim of the project is development of skills and employability of youth in Jammu & Kashmir.
Unemployed residents of Jammu and Kashmir, who have done graduation or above, are being covered under this scheme.
“There were 300 candidates who have been short-listed for skill development training in co-ordination with NSDC and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir,” Dubey said.
Duration of the training will be three months leading to a certification at the end, and recruitment to the posts of 135 probationary officers and 15 probationary clerks.
During the meeting, Dubey announced that the bank will take the entire 300 candidate post training.
Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, inaugurated the ‘Skill Development Programme’ at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu.

Pakistan's sharia court gets first woman judge in 33 years
KARACHI: For the first time in its history, a 56-year-old female judge was on Monday sworn in at Pakistan's national sharia court, which hears cases under the Islamic legislation.
Ashraf Jehan, who was serving as an additional judge at the Sindh high court, took oath, becoming the first female judge to be appointed in the court's 33-year history.
The court was established in 1980 during the rule of military dictator Ziaul Haq as part of his policy towards Islamisation of Pakistan's institutions.The law is also known as known as the 'Hudood Laws', which run parallel to the penal code.
Chief Justice of the Shariat court Agha Rafiq Ahmed said, "I took the initiative as it would send the message in the world that we are enlightened people and would dispel many misconceptions."

Devendra Kumar Pathak appointed as Special DG, BSF
New Delhi: Senior IPS officer Devendra Kumar Pathak has been appointed as Special Director General of Border Security Force (BSF).
Pathak, who has been appointed as the new Special Director General (SDG) of the Border Security Force (BSF), is due to retire in March, 2016.
A 1979-batch IPS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadres, he is working in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) since November 11, 2011 and presently he is posted as Special Director General of the force.
The press release of Union Home Ministry on Monday said the appointment would be with immediate effect and till the date of his superannuation or until further orders, whichever event takes place earlier.

Ex-UN envoy Hardeep Singh Puri joins BJP
Career diplomat Hardeep Singh Puri, who recently retired as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, today joined BJP.
Welcoming him in the party fold, BJP President Rajnath Singh said, “We look forward to utilising his experience in the areas of Foreign, Security and Trade policies”.
A 1974-batch Indian Foreign Service Officer, Puri in his 39 years of service held several senior positions in the Ministry of External Affairs and Defence and held Ambassadorial assignments in London and Brasilia.
In 2011 and 2012, as Permanent Representative at UN in New York, he led the Indian delegation to the Security Council. He also chaired its Counter-Terrorism Committee.
Puri said he was delighted to formally join the party which he had long admired for its strong sense of nationalism.
He said he looked forward to doing party work and was ready to contribute in whatever manner the Party President and its senior leadership asked him to.

India, Saudi pact on domestic workers
India signed a labour cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia on Thursday that will cover about a quarter of the 28 lakh Indian expatriates working there and could be the stepping stone for a more comprehensive pact covering all Indian workers in the Gulf Kingdom, said official sources.The Agreement on Labour Cooperation for Domestic Service Workers Recruitment, inked by Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and Saudi Arabian Labour Minister Adel bin Mohammed Fakeih, will be monitored by a committee of senior officials.

Chile takes seat at UNSC
Santiago: Chile took its seat at the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) as a non-permanent member of the international body till Dec 31, 2015.
It marked the fifth time the South American nation has been invited to sit on the council and help uphold the UN's "principles of non-intervention and respect for international treaties", Chile's foreign ministry said in a statement Wednesday.
During the 68th UN General Assembly held in New York, Chile's bid to sit on the council received unanimous backing of fellow Latin American countries, as well as countries in other parts of the world, Xinhua reported.
In addition to Chile, other non-permanent members joining the council for the next two years included Chad, Lithuania and Nigeria.
Chile previously sat on the UNSC from 1952-1953, 1961-1962, 1996-1997 and 2003-2004.

International Theatre Festival from Jan 27
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi would be conducting the sixth edition of the International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFOK) from January 27 to February 3 next year at Thrissur.
The theme of the sixth ITFOK is based on gender, transition and spectatorship which have contemporary resonance, a Sangeetha Nataka Akademi release here said.Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi had made an inspiring move by kick-starting a theatre festival of international magnitude in 2008. Since its inception, the event has been a much awaited cultural festival of Kerala.The current edition would showcase international plays from nine countries. Around 22 ground-breaking plays from national and international theatre companies have been invited for the event.
In addition, ITFOK will host Colloquium with scholars of international repute. Other highlights of the current edition include director in conversation, music and poetry crossover, traditional theatre (Yakshaganam and Lavani/Tamasha) and a special collaborative theatre production, `Burning Flowers.`
Another unique attraction in this edition originates from Sri Lanka, the Janakaraliya Tent. This tent theatre will be the fourth venue at ITFOK and is supported by India-Sri Lanka foundation. Many performances would be held in outdoor spaces for viewers to enjoy.
"The work we have started is a treasure to Kerala and has become an event of international significance," P V Krishnan Nair, secretary, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi said in the release.
